Pennsylvania Road Trip: Baking Memories, Sipping Wine & Family Fun in Lehigh Valley

There’s nothing quite like the open road to kick off a perfect weekend, and that’s exactly what my mom and I decided to do. We packed our bags, curated a playlist worthy of any epic journey, and set off for Pennsylvania. Our destination? A heartwarming visit to my beloved grandparents and aunt. Road trips hold a special place in my heart – there’s a unique freedom and joy in them, especially when the journey isn’t so long that I start getting restless (my personal threshold is usually around the four-hour mark). For me, a road trip means an excuse to let loose and car-dance the entire way. My mom and I truly outdid ourselves this past weekend, busting out some incredibly enthusiastic moves to classic Rob Base. I’m almost certain we provided a few amused snickers for the drivers passing by, adding a touch of spontaneous fun to our travels.

One of my favorite traditions when visiting my grandparents is taking over their kitchen. It’s become a running joke, really. A few visits ago, I even presented them with a “pantry essentials” list – items that absolutely must be kept in stock if they ever hope for one of my homemade cakes. Flour, sugar, and butter are non-negotiable staples. And bless their hearts, they always oblige, knowing full well that their compliance directly translates into delicious baked goods. My grandmother, especially, relishes these visits because it means a well-deserved break from her own kitchen duties. So, when I arrived on Friday, it was no surprise to find a favorite magazine lying open on the counter, a page clearly bookmarked with a cake recipe. It was a major hint, expertly delivered, and one I happily accepted. How could I ever say no to my sweet, loving grandmother? Of course, I gladly rolled up my sleeves and got to baking.

The Delightful Cinnamon Sugar Cake: A Family Favorite

I’m incredibly glad I made that cake, because it turned out to be absolutely delicious. It’s a deceptively simple recipe, yet it delivers on flavor in spades. The cake itself boasts a lovely buttery vanilla profile, rich and comforting, while the cinnamon sugar swirl baked right into its center provides a delicate sweetness and a hint of warm spice. But my absolute favorite part, without a doubt, was the crunchy cinnamon sugar topping. It added a fantastic textural contrast, transforming each bite into a delightful experience. Just thinking about it now makes my mouth water; I genuinely wish I had another slice right here!

The cake was such a hit that my brother, bless his heart, managed to devour four huge slices on Saturday alone. Four! I know, it sounds unbelievable, but I had to share that little detail because I found it utterly hilarious. Every time I turned around, he seemed to have materialized another slice onto his plate. I took it as the highest compliment, a testament to the cake’s irresistible charm and his undeniable sweet tooth. It’s moments like these, gathered around a table with family, sharing homemade treats and laughter, that truly make a weekend special.

Beyond Baking: A Vineyard Adventure in Lehigh Valley

Baking wasn’t the only delightful activity on our agenda this weekend. My aunt and I carved out some time for another one of our favorite pastimes: exploring local vineyards and indulging in some wine tasting. I absolutely adore wine, and Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley region boasts some hidden gems. We headed over to a local establishment, eager to sample their latest offerings. The atmosphere was lively, the setting charming, and the wines truly impressive. Naturally, our enthusiasm got the better of us, and we ended up purchasing an entire case. You could say we’re quite enthusiastic about our wine, but hey, we certainly know how to orchestrate a fun girls’ weekend! Later that evening, I put some of our new red wine to good use, transforming it into a wonderfully tasty sangria. It was a perfect concoction, bursting with fruit flavors, and I’m happy to report that it’s all gone now – a testament to its deliciousness and our enjoyment.

If you ever find yourself in the beautiful Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, I cannot recommend a stop at Vynecrest highly enough. It’s an experience that truly stands out. The staff there are not just friendly but also incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, guiding you through their selection with genuine passion. The views from the vineyard are nothing short of breathtaking, offering sprawling vistas that invite you to simply pause and take it all in. And, of course, the wine itself is nothing short of amazing. It’s a perfect blend of exceptional service, stunning scenery, and exquisite flavors.

While the vineyard is arguably at its most vibrant and picturesque when its vines are in full bloom, there’s a distinct beauty to its rustic charm even in other seasons. This particular photo, with its earthy tones and raw beauty, perfectly captures that essence. It speaks to the enduring character of the land and the tradition of winemaking.

A person taking a picture, capturing a moment within a moment

Here’s a fun, meta moment: me getting my picture taken while I’m in the process of taking a picture! My aunt has a wonderful obsession with capturing every moment on camera. She essentially documented our entire girls’ weekend in a beautiful photographic chronicle. It’s truly her thing, and thanks to her, we have a treasure trove of memories to look back on.

Wine sipping – easily one of my favorite parts of the whole experience! In this particular shot, I believe I was sampling the very red wine that I later used to craft that fantastic sangria in the evening. It’s always a pleasure to taste the raw material before transforming it into something new and exciting.

Our wine loot! Gotta love the clever saying on the bag: “We recycled some grapes that night.” It perfectly encapsulated our spirited wine-tasting and purchasing spree. It was a weekend filled with laughter, good company, delicious food, and wonderful wine – a perfect blend of family traditions and new adventures, creating cherished memories that will last until our next Pennsylvania getaway.

Love and sweet treats,

Jennie

Classic Cinnamon Sugar Bundt Cake Recipe

Inspired by my grandmother’s subtle hint and the overwhelming success of our weekend bake, I’m thrilled to share this simple yet incredibly flavorful cinnamon sugar cake recipe with you. It’s a comforting classic that’s perfect for any occasion, and as my brother can attest, it’s dangerously delicious!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar (for cake batter)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for cinnamon sugar swirl)
  • 2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • Optional: Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Thoroughly grease and flour a standard tube pan or Bundt pan, ensuring every crevice is coated to prevent sticking.
  2. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, using an electric mixer, beat together the softened butter and 1 1/4 cups of sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy, usually about 3 minutes. This step is crucial for achieving a tender crumb.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next. Stir in the vanilla extract until just combined.
  5. Gradually add the flour mixture and sour cream to the butter mixture, alternating between the two. Begin and end with the flour mixture. Beat on low speed until just combined after each addition, being careful not to overmix.
  6. Spread half of the cake batter evenly into your prepared tube pan.
  7. In a small separate bowl, stir together the remaining 1/2 cup of sugar and the ground cinnamon. This will be your fragrant cinnamon sugar mixture.
  8. Sprinkle half of the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the batter in the pan.
  9. Carefully spoon the remaining cake batter over the cinnamon sugar layer, spreading it gently to cover.
  10. Finally, sprinkle the remaining cinnamon sugar mixture over the top of the batter.
  11. Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until a wooden skewer or toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean, indicating it’s fully cooked.
  12. Allow the cake to cool in the pan on a wire rack for about 30 minutes. This allows it to firm up before removal.
  13. After 30 minutes, carefully invert the pan onto the wire rack and lift the pan off, allowing the cake to cool completely.
  14. If you’re feeling a little fancy, dust the cooled cake with a sprinkle of powdered sugar before serving. Enjoy this delightful treat!
